Box office: Hangover opens strongly as Drift continues to fade

The Hangover Part III posterThe third instalment of US comedy The Hangover made a debut of nearly $9m at the Australian box office at the weekend. While largely panned by critics, the film opened on 496 screens and took home a total of $8,928,674.

Meanwhile Australian surfing drama Drift added another $42,000 to its takings in its fourth week of release, according  to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia. It manages to remain in the box office top 20 and has taken $819,321 since its release.

Iron Man 3 continues to perform well, taking an additional $1.2 million across the weekend on 250 screens, averaging at $4,948 per screen. Star Trek Into Darkness slipped from the top spot last week to second place while the next highest-grossing film, The Call, was well behind with takings of $412,898.

Thriller Dead Man Down made its debut at number eight with $199,726 and The Reluctant Fundamentalist debuted at number nine taking $133,116.

Roadshow’s Olympus Has Fallen dropped the furthest this weekend, making $43,994 in its sixth week.
