Dunkirk and Baby Driver top weekend box office takings
Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk starring Harry Styles has jumped straight to number one at the weekend box office, earning $6.002m across 535 screens.
The Warner Brothers film has earned $6.250m in total, beating Sony Pictures’ Baby Driver which came in second place by pulling in $2.449m over the weekend.
Last week’s leader, Spiderman: Homecoming, grabbed $2.071m over the weekend, dropping two places to number three.
Falling one spot to finish in fourth was Despicable Me 3, earning $947,943 across 298 screens.
Cars 3 came in fifth brining in $483,279 and taking its total box office earnings to $12.621m.

Dear Abigail Dawson.. Dunkirk is not a thriller movie, nor a drama movie.
It is a war film about World War Two. There are no thrills and using the words thriller and drama is akin to describing a world war as a scary experience.. I suggest you educate yourself about history before writing such an article. David Chambers

I have also responded to your email on this.
As promised, I have tidied up the wording on this so it is less clunky. I agree that the word “thriller” was somewhat misplaced here.
I think it’s worth bearing in mind though that the film definitely seeks to capitalise on, and profit from, the “dramatic” events of the war – and indeed in lots of its official online collateral is variously categorised as: action, thriller and drama.
Perhaps this clunky wording is more a symptom of the film’s market positioning and advertising efforts, rather than Abby’s lack of education?
Regardless, I have amended and apologise if we contributed to any distress.
