Dying newspaper stars in The Office spin-off ‘The Paper’

A new spin-off to the US version of The Office will feature idealistic reporters struggling to keep journalism alive.

The Paper is from The Office creator Greg Daniels and, in a plot that may resonate uncomfortably for Mumbrella readers, it is about a declining newspaper. It is set to debut in September on the NBCU-owned streaming service Peacock and is expected to stream in Australia on Binge.

Oscar Nuñez, who played Oscar in the original series, will return as a supporting character in the new show. Leading the show will be Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) and Italian actress Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus).

The promotional photo from the show was revealed at the NBC Upfronts presentation in New York where Gleeson appeared alongside Impacciatore and Nuñez. He spoke about the premise of the show:

“We are three members of a wonderful ensemble cast of underdog characters that are banding together to keep journalism alive.”

“My character has the unwavering optimistic belief that he can turn [newspaper] The Truth Teller to the glory of its heyday… And, if you’re wondering, I will not be using this Irish accent,” Gleeson said.

Since 2005, more than 3,200 print newspapers have closed in the US with 130 closures reported in 2024. Many counties are reported to have no local news outlets.

An Australian version of The Office debuted in October 2024 on Prime Video. Set in an office supplies company, the local series starred comedian Felicity Ward. Prime Video has not yet announced whether it will make a second season of the show.
