Elton John biopic Rocketman takes $4.52m at weekend box office

Live action feature Aladdin kept the top spot in the weekend box office despite the Elton John biopic, Rocketman hitting screens across Australia.

Aladdin repeated last week’s success taking $5.75m across 479 screens, beating out Rocketman’s $4.52m from 521 venues.

Starring Taron Egerton as Elton John, with Kit Connor and Matthew Illesley as younger versions of the pop star, the movie had its Australian release on Thursday. However Disney’s live action movie proved more popular at the local box office.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters also premiered on the weekend. The sci-fi movie which was previewed to wide acclaim at the San Diego Comic-Con last year, took $2.65m across 379 screens

Previous weeks’ top movies rounded out the weekend’s five best grossing movies with John Wick: Chapter Three taking $1.62m, Pokemon Detective Pikachu making $992,000 and Avengers: Endgame taking $792,000.

Since Avengers: Endgame’s launch a month ago, the movie has grossed $82m at the Australian box office for Disney.
