Ex Kaleidoscope boss Kylie Green launches industry job board AdLand Jobs
Kaleidoscope Marketing Communications founder Kylie Green is the latest industry executive to launch a website targeting the media and marketing industry.
Mumbrella can reveal that Green, who left the Photon Group-owned company earlier this year, is behind new jobs board AdLand Jobs. Green is also a former chair of the Australasian Promotional Marketing Association.
She said that AdLand Jobs had come about after she identified “an unfulfilled niche in the market”.
Several other executives have launched sites targeting the media and marketing industry in the last couple of years, with varying levels of success. Former MTV staff Pip Jamieson and Matt Fayle launched The Loop, which is funded through job ads and offers industry professionals the chance to upload creative portfolios.
Google Ad Planner estimates that The Loop has around 6,500 unique visitors per month. Mediacafe’s and Mediascope’s traffic is too low to be calculated by Ad Planner.
(Update: The Loop’s internal Google Analytics counts 25,653 unique visitors and 61,569 visits a month.)
According to Green, her site will target “agencies looking to hire new or experienced talent from within AdLand and job seekers looking to enter the industry or for a change of career.”
The site’s business model is based on advertisers being willing to pay $150 to post each job.
Green said: “I understand AdLand because I have worked in the industry for most of my career and as an employer of talent I was frustrated with the few choices available for our industry to advertise and attract exceptional talent. AdLand Jobs isn’t only a niche job board but also a source of reference for those working in the industry.”
She said that the site has “the look and feel inspired by hit TV show Mad Men”.
She said: “I have my sights firmly fixed on AdLand Jobs becoming the number one site where agencies advertise their jobs, the first place job seekers go when they are looking to land a job in the advertising industry and a real online hub for resources and information.”
Meanwhile, Fairfax today revealed its new online recruitment play – jobs.com.au is aimed at targeting local job markets.
(Declaration of interest: Mumbrella also offers a free jobs board)
Goodluck Kylie, no doubt it’ll be a smash with your power behind it.

Yes the industry needs a site like this, but it needs one with jobs posted by the agencies themselves, not the same job listed 5 times by 5 different recruiters.
A recruiter free job site would be a huge it.

Great work Kylie!

Congratulations on your launch Kylie – I take my hat off to all the businesses who have identified a niche and then taken on the significant challenge to launch and execute in this market.
Thanks for the mention Tim – and for linking to that video 🙂
We are progressing well – in the coming month we’ll have approx 2,500 ‘beyond mainstream’ advertising listings and a very workable and useful resource to present to our highly focused market of ad planner/buyers and marketers.
In our first year a huge effort has been put into getting the MediaScope platform right from a development point of view (with a bit of work left to do), populating the advertising directory, creating content and forming relationships with key industry bodies and various complimentary businesses.
We are also realising extensions to our service particularly as our knowledge and IP surrounding the ever fragmenting ad & media market increases.
We are well positioned to further consolidate and continue evolving next year.
Congratulations again Kylie on AdLand Jobs – I wish you every success!

Yep keep the flesh-peddling recruiters out of there!

AdLand Jobs has just launched as of yesterday and the aim is to be a niche industry job board where the agencies advertise their jobs and we get the talent back in the game! @ Tony – agree completely; as a previous agency head my target is the agencies themselves vs recruiters who all have the same job brief.

@ Denise – thanks and same to you!

@Kylie – thanks for the reply – in that case, great work and good luck !

Congrats Kylie and I hope you do well.

I am not going to plug my own thing here.
There are many online start up’s emerging after the GFC. It will be interesting which ones fly.

@plugaway – Sorry but I couldn’t help myself…. digital Transfer and mumBRELLA are probably the only local job boards that offer free job listings which are targeted at the creative and digital space. In my view paying for a generic job board listing is old school and is not a sustainable business model. As I mentioned before, I wish all the success to Kylie and her team and I will be interested to watch how the company diversifies in the future.

@Kyliegreen. Am confused about your comments suggesting a recruiter free site when 60% of the current jobs listed are from recruiters.
Not too sure about the need to log-in/register to apply as it feels like Adland needs to capture details to use in sales pitches for display ads and eDM.
My2cents only, and best of luck

the problem is a lot of these boards don’t deliver candidates. great to spread your ad across 10 sites but if none of them deliver anyone then it’s a waste of time.

@Less Giving, More Taking – nicely said dude!

As a previous agency head and employer I understand the talent shortage and the need to find the good talent again and this is the aim of AdLand Jobs… to get the talent back into the market and get the agencies posting their jobs directly on a job board vs recruiters.
@ Less Giving, More Taking – the registration details are only used for sending job alerts and our own updates and will not be passed onto third parties and our focus for targeting is only agencies – yes a few recruiters are on there now but this is not our focus or target.
Giving it a shot and trying to get the lost talent back into our industry and keep them in the industry!
Good Luck with all your ventures as well!

I’m with Andrew. At least 60% of the jobs listed on the AdLandJobs site are recruiter ads. If the ‘goal’ truly is to have agencies advertising available roles, why not stick to that goal? Why allow recruiters to advertise? Just sayin…..
I’m one of those “lost talent” that you speak of. I have many years fully integrated marcomms experience, yet because of my age I’ve been well & truly pushed out of the industry – not to mention told by recruiters that I’m not a cultural fit for most agencies as my maturity works against me. It’s crazy. So, I’m moving on to a totally new career path in Feb 2011 and unfortunately yet another ad site that peddles the same ads as all the other sites, and who allow recruiters to dominate with either fake ads or repeated ads is not enough to woo me back.
Having said this, I do wish you every success Kylie – all your previous ventures have been successful as far as I know – so perhaps there’s a golden nugget that I’m missing here.

Good luck Kylie.
I’ve had a very positive experience with the Loop people, and have met them now and rate what they are doing.
But hey, there’s always room for another player in the sand pit.

@ Melbourne-ite – I certainly understand where you are coming from re: the age barrier. Both age and women leaving the industry to start a family and finding less flexibility in AdLand to return to work are two issues I am committed to addressing. Feel free to drop me an email as would like to chat more about your experience and I’ll share some of mine.
@Malbino – The Loop have a great model and refreshing approach too – in fact have reached out to them for a catch up in the new year. And like you said always room for new players!

1. Kylie, why would agencies or recruiters pay $150 to advertise jobs on your site when they can advertise them for free on Mumbrella?
2. the lost talent in the industry isn’t the fault of recruiters or methods of advertising for them. it’s predominantly because agency heads consistently overlook or are suspicious of good candidates over 45 and generally don’t have the vision to create flexible work solutions for mums with kids looking for flexiblity. oh yes and because some of the people who’ve been out of work for a long time aren’t that good
3. one of the many reasons why none of these sites will adequately replace good headhunters is that the best people are rarely if ever looking for jobs – they need to be ‘sold’ on them.
4. others include…..agency people rarely have the time to screen appropriate cvs from the myriad of inappropriate ones who apply for jobs, they are generally crap at managing the recruitment process on their own and often piss off the candidates by their unprofessional behaviour during the process and…in the very competitive business of attracting the top talent, they lose out if they’re not good enough at selling the role in.
I realise there are plenty of crap recruiters out there. I’m happy about that because it makes my business more successful. But agencies that try to do it themselves won’t get the best talent.
I look forward to receiving all your comments

@ Flesh Peddler – Everyone has their right to an opinion and I respect the opinions you have expressed here. I’m giving it a shot and like I’m sure you are doing, working hard to make this a success. Best of luck in your business.

@Melbourne-ite & @Andrew it’s so refreshing to hear you guys say this : ) Not looking to plug digital Transfer again, but I think we’re sitting on something valuable here at dT although I’d hate to jinx it – we’re hoping that dT grows into a new way of thinking, a brand thats a tool- having our backing and long term commitment to keep the board(s) free for the industry, we believe in providing content people want to read. dT currently offers a 30 day FREE job listing for Digital, Media and Advertising Agencies across Australia and the Asian region.
In order to avoid spammers and people posting non-existent jobs on dT, we charge recruitment companies a small dT TAX for the damage because we want dT to stay true and niche. The model thus far, is working extremely well and as a result we have recently opened dT.ASIA with dT.EU and dT.US will be available by end of 2010.
It’s an exciting time and space for job-board owners but we’ll only have to wait and see which strategy flies.

Hi Bart,
Ironic you should mention spam. I have to delete your plugs for Digital Transfer from Mumbrella’s Facebook page more than any other person’s.
I’d suggest that one person’s plug is another person’s spam. And you’re spamming.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
I wish you nothing but the best Kylie – you’re a talented business person and if you’re involved, it’s going to be a success!

@Kylie the fact that you have sparked such discussion might say that you are on to something here 🙂
Bottom line is I think we’d all love a recruiter free site.
How you monetise this is the challenge.
Good luck !

Hey, I heard that Patsy has offloaded FBI recruitment to a couple of her employees.
This surely allows the Campaign Brief blog to launch a job board for agencies to find creative staff directly without causing any grief at home.
Or not?

Apologies Tim!

How is another industry jobs board niche?

@Bart – mate use some common sense. Even Tim says that you are a spammer!
We shall see who soars and who crashes – good luck all the same.

@Nic Halley – I agree, again it comes down to engagement. Give the user what they want and they will remember you, possibly come back and even might tell their mates…
Where there is audience engagement there are potential revenues…
Quality doesn’t need to get shoved down peoples throats. Quality gets talked about and after a while shines through…

@Kylie I just Googled ‘Mumbrella’ and there is an Adword for Adland. I am sure that Tim will probably have something to say about that…

Hi “Speaking of ethics”
Thanks for flagging that up. Kylie tells me that this was a mistake and the keyword is no longer being bought.

why would anyone want to join this industry?

@ The Differentiator. You could always get a job in the no 1 industry for doing next to nothing for society! Banking. Advertising Exec’s come in at 2nd…
As for individuals having a go themselves and identifying niche’s; good on them and good luck to you. Competition is a good thing and helps to keep the big guys on their toes.

@Mr Greedy – Just don’t buy other peoples brand names as Adwords, nor constantly spam people to get there though…
I agree – good luck with the start up’s!!
