EXCLUSIVE: The Royals scoop up University of Melbourne creative account

The University of Melbourne has awarded its creative account to The Royals, following a competitive pitch, Mumbrella can reveal.

The incumbent on the account, WPP’s Wunderman Thompson (soon to be part of WPP’s revived agency VML), held it since July 2021, working alongside fellow WPP agencies Mindshare, Hogarth and Ogilvy PR.

Lin Macdonald, acting executive director, communications and marketing, at the University of Melbourne told Mumbrella: “The University of Melbourne is delighted to partner with The Royals. We were really impressed by their creative and publishing capability.

“We’re looking forward to partnering with the team to engage with our communities in clever and supportive ways.”

The Royals’ managing partner, Andrew Siwka, told Mumbrella: “[We’re] delighted to be appointed as University of Melbourne’s lead creative agency, after an extensive competitive process.

“We are looking forward to building on the University’s foundation of excellence to connect even more deeply with students, partners and the community at large.”

Last December, the agency was forced to make a number of roles redundant after the closure of Deliveroo, as the delivery service was a “significant client” and its shut down was an “unexpected event”, according to an agency spokesperson.

However, this year, The Royals have bounced back – recently launching work for Snackbrands Australia’s CC’s, marking the brand’s first major marketing campaign “in some time”.

James Deysel, marketing director at Snackbrands Australia said The Royals “rose to the challenge by respecting the brand’s traditional irreverence and distinctive assets whilst introducing a bold new approach”.

Also earlier in the year, The Royals launched some cheeky work for online sex toy retailer, Wild Secrets, aiming to normalise sexual pleasure for older Australians.

It was also appointed by social enterprise Australian Unity in August, with its remit including strategic and creative duties across the brand’s portfolio.
