Fairfax Media locks in new partnership with Taronga Zoo

Fairfax Media has confirmed a new partnership with Taronga Zoo, which will see an increase in editorial, commentary and marketing support.

The announcement:

Fairfax Media and Taronga Zoo announce an exclusive partnership that will see Fairfax bolster support for both Taronga and Western Plains Zoos via its leading news mastheads The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun Herald, as well as through its suburban and regional networks.

The new partnership builds upon an existing relationship between the two organisations, and will see greater editorial, commercial and marketing support to ensure the Zoo’s milestone activities and key events are showcased and supported.

The partnership will also see Taronga grant Fairfax exclusive or first access to some of its conservation-related news stories, which are set to be delivered via award-winning photography and editorial across the metro network.

As part of a broader revamp strategy of The Sun Herald to be driven by new editor Cosima Marriner, the focus will be on The Sun Herald as key editorial partner.

“This new partnership builds upon existing partnerships and campaigns that we have with Taronga, and we look forward to rolling these out across the coming months. The ground- breaking wildlife conservation work undertaken at both Taronga and Western Plains Zoos is something we’re excited to champion – and the pictorial opportunities with their spectacular wildlife are sure to resonate with our readers, especially on a Sunday,” said Cosima Marriner, Editor, The Sun-Herald.

“Our support will include a combination of editorial coverage, rich media print and digital activity, plus curated events for readers and subscribers – all aimed at driving engagement with the Taronga brand, physical site and their conservation programs,” added Marriner.

“We are thrilled that Sydney institutions The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sun Herald and Taronga Zoo are coming together to champion wildlife conservation. Conservation is a huge issue worldwide, and we look forward to spotlighting all of the valuable work that Taronga is doing to help in the area,” said Lisa Davies, Editor, The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Taronga is delighted to announce Fairfax as its newest partner. Through the combination of Taronga’s experts in wildlife conservation and Fairfax’s first-class journalists and photographers, I am confident that this partnership will highlight wildlife and the urgent need to conserve it in a powerful and compelling way, and will further the important and often groundbreaking work that Taronga is doing for wildlife,” said Libby Hodgson, Director, Marketing, Commercial and Fundraising, Taronga Conservation Society Australia.

Conservation, environment and wildlife issues will form the core of Fairfax’s coverage, drawing on key editorial expertise including The Sydney Morning Herald Environment Editor Peter Hannam.

The partnership between Fairfax and Taronga kicks off this month and runs for an initial three years.
