Shares in Fairfax Media today hit the lowest point in the company’s history.

They dropped to 69c, valuing Fairfax at $1.6bn. The previous low was 69.5c, in August last year.

The downward move in Fairfax shares came despite the ASX as a whole moving sharply upwards. Fairfax shares have declined steadily over the last two months, with a fall now amounting to about 16%.

Fairfax Media publishes newspaper mastheads including the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age with other digital assets including RSVP and Domain.

The last time the Fairfax share price was more than the cover price of The Age or SMH was in early 2010.
