Fox pulls the plug on Terra Nova

The Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi drama Terra Nova will not see a second season, it emerged today.

US network Fox told E!Online that the show would not go beyond a first season, however the studio, 20th Century Fox TV, is to shop the series around to other networks.

The CGI-packed Avatar-meets-Jurassic Park series was filmed at Village Roadshow Studios and in the Gold Coast hinterland.

If it is not picked up by another network, or production is moved away from the Gold Coast, it would be a major blow for the local Queensland screen industry.

The production employed around 150 to 300 crew, depending on the day, with 75% of the operation staffed by Australians.

Filming the first series was plagued by false starts due to flooding, a growing Australian dollar, high staff turnover and creative differences – even though Fox had commissioned 13 episodes of the first season up front.

The UK’s Independent newspaper put the first season at $US70m and the pilot alone at $US20m.

Broadcast on Ten, the show started strongly, with ratings around 1m metro viewers but dropped by November.
