Photojournalist Ella Rubeli named Walkley Young Journalist of the Year
Freelance photojournalist Ella Rubeli has been named 2014 Walkley Young Journalist of the Year as judges commended her “extraordinary” use of video, photojournalism, print and multimedia.
Rubeli’s three submitted pieces appeared in now defunct news site The Global Mail and focused on coal miners in the Hunter Valley, a mother grieving the loss of her son and an indigenous housing crisis in Tennant Creek. The 24-year-old won praise for her “outstanding use of all mediums”.
Rubeli “not only displayed the incredible emotion and impact that great storytelling can have, but proved that photojournalism will continue to play a powerful role across all mediums and has a very bright future”, judges said.
The Sydney journalist was also named the winner of the camerawork category.
Other winners included Benjamin Collins of Business Insider who picked up the text-based journalism award, the ABC’s Caitlyn Gribbin who was named the winner of the radio/audio category and Joel Tozer from SBS2’s The Feed who walked away with the television/video award.
The Innovation in Journalism category was won by Liam Mannix from Adelaide’s InDaily, while Holly Humphreys from Monash University was named Student Journalist of the Year.
Meanwhile, two students were awarded Jacoby-Walkley Scholarships after judges found it too hard to pick an outright winner.
Megan Stafford, who attends James Cook University and Kirrily Schwarz, from Deakin University, will spend eight weeks at the Nine Network and four weeks at The Walkley Foundation for Journalism.
Gratz all.
