FX Australia commissions first local production, Mr Inbetween

Australian subscription television channel, FX, has commissioned its first Australian TV series, as part of plans to bring more local content to the channel.

‘Mr Inbetween’ will be a six-episode series, written by Scott Ryan, based on his feature film The Magician.

The series will be directed by Nash Edgerton – in his TV production debut – and co-produced by Jungle and Blue Tongue Films with Michele Bennett as producer.

Mr Inbetween will tell the story of a hitman called Ray Shoesmith, who has to run his business while maintaining friendships, parental duties and his romantic life.

Edgerton said of the launch: “I couldn’t be more excited about sharing with the world more of Scott Ryan’s dangerously fun character, Ray Shoesmith, with the help of FX, Jungle and producer Michele Bennett.”

The show is expected to broadcast on FX in 2018, alongside other TV shows on FX Australia such as The Walking Dead and Legion.

Jacqui Feeney, Australia New Zealand managing director, Fox Networks Group, said Mr Inbetween was the perfect fit for the channel.

“As part of the FX ‘fearless’ ethos, we’ve chosen creative partners who inherently believe in the FX brand and can bring to the channel their own distinctive original tone and voice.

“We’ve brokered a development collaboration with the FX US team leaning in to their expertise for nurturing quality talent and curating truly original, commanding and compelling TV.  So far, so good.”

The series is being financed with the help of Screen Australia and Screen NSW.

Mike Cowap, investment manager of multi-platform at Screen Australia said the team at Jungle were perfect to bring Ryan’s story to life.

“We are so pleased to see Nash Edgerton returning to Australia for his television directorial debut.

“More than a decade has passed since we met Scott Ryan’s deadpan hit-man Ray Shoesmith and who better to bring this story to the small screen than the prolific team at Jungle – renowned savvy filmmakers who will add depth to this story world by enabling audiences to connect with additional content through an array of social media platforms.”

Create NSW CEO Michael Brealey added: “Nash is such great home-grown talent. We’ve seen him grow from a stellar career as a top international stuntman to being a passionate generator of creative content which he is bringing home to produce here in NSW.”

Casting will be announced shortly and production will begin in mid July.
