Australia to stage 10,000 garage sales in recycling extravaganza

An estimated 10,000 garage sales will take place simultaneously this weekend as the fourth annual Garage Sale Trail takes place around Australia.

The sustainability event has been supported with community service ads with more than 500,000 people expected to take part. Parlour Creative worked on the campaign.

The event is sponsored by eBay and car share firm GoGet and state government partners NSW EPA, ACT NOWaste, Sustainability Victoria, Government of Queensland the Waste Authority in WA and Zero Waste in South Australia.

Individuals, households, community groups, schools, local businesses and organisations are all able to register for free to take part in the event.

Garage Sale Trail ambassador and TV presenter Barry Du Bois is encouraging Australians to think about their re-use and recycling habits.

“The fact is that a lot of stuff that’s put out for council waste collection isn’t waste at all. I spend most of my time breathing new life into old pieces and it’s such a satisfying thing to do,” Du Bois said. “Reuse, recycle, repurpose, redistribute, reclaim, recover – whatever you call it we all need to be doing it.”

Sydney musician Josh Pyke and stylist Megan Morton are among the ambassadors.
