George Negus: The big question is Why?
Ten will tonight air its first promo for new news show 6PM With George Negus.
In the promo, Negus – one of the original reporters on Nine’s 60 Minutes – says the key question that he will be asking is “Why?”.
The show goes to air early next year as Ten moves to an extended run of news and current affairs starting with its 5pm bulletin, running to 6PM With George Negus followed by a state evening news bulleting at 6.30pm before The 7PM Project.
Neighbours and The Simpsons will move to Ten’s new digital channel Eleven which launches in January.
Meanwhile, Tony Ritchie, EP of 6PM With George Negus, has told Mumbrella that the program’s individual items will be longer than rivals, with more live interviews. He said: “Whatever we do on day one, we won’t be doing on day 361. I’m sure it will have evolved.”
As to potential audience size, he said: “We’re coming off a programme that’s doing 500,000 now and we’ve now got to find that audience in an older demographic. I’d be happy with half a million.”
I love George. Great journo, decent bloke to boot.

Hi Alison, there is one out there it’s called something like ‘george negus is a f***ing legend’

I didn’t know George had that many relatives…
It is going to be very interesting to see him pontificating in an age when we want headlines not frownlines.

@ K Watson – George Negus is the best that’s out there.
Have fun watching A Current Affair, personally i prefer real news…

@ Anony Mouse…. Firstly after you divorced Georges dad did you go back to your maiden name or marry into the mouse name?
Secondly are you really sure your son George is the best? Because if he is why has been over looked for quite so many years.
Thirdly: Out there. I wasn’t aware that George had come out yet!

It is good to see a commercial channel attempting to do something with REAL/SERIOUS news, not just headlines, and light celebrity entertainment crap associated with ACA & TT. It should not just be left to the ABC.
At least this is a step toward stopping the dumbing down of Australia.

Thrilled that Ten are investing in new journalism, but I suspect they’ve bitten off more than they can chew.
Two-and-a-half hours of news and current affairs content each day would scare off ABC viewers, let alone Ten’s hip young things. Besides, there’s not enough news content out there to justify that much air-time each day – witness the high-rotation loop on Sky News/ABC24.
And I’m also struggling to understand how their 5-6 bulletin will differ from their 6.30-7 bulletin. Both state-based wraps of the day, aren’t they?

This looks like a Hungry Beast rip off, just more high profile and commercial.

George Negus says that the question that should asked more often is “WHY”, and I agree with him. Why, after twenty years of a successful economy in the tears 1950 to 1970, did the treasurers following have to start reducing the top tax from that 66.6%. Why, after Paul Keating ran the economy into the recession by reducing the top tax to 50% in the 1980’s, did the following treasurers resume the reducing after the top tax had to be returned to 60% to escape the recession. And Why, after our country had already been dipped into the recession three times by the same cause, did Wayne then have to further reduce the top tax and cause further obscene incomes, high prices and costs to services – a natural phenomenon with too low a tax on the greedy and without a complementary low or no tax on the low income wage earners? To believe that the treasurers were and are responsible, intelligent and competent people would seem to be the beliefs of a fanatic or madman.

It should have been “Years”, not tears, years of good economy for the workers

The big WHY question that George should be asking is WHY are so many Australian houses and businesses constructed on flood plains ? The floodplains have been there for million years ( give or take a bit ) and their approx boundaries known for over 100 years . Few of the affected houses are over 100 years old.
There will be plenty more floods and not hard to guess where . Some political statesmanship needed now not in the distant future. Houses can mostly be moved .

Hopefully George will deliver a proper current affairs show unlike the 2 other networks shows which spend more time telling us about the latest slimming and makeup techniques and don’t deliver real stories. I want to know about the world not the latest Bra designs!!!

George the explainer, it’s time to tell Australia why.

It’s a risk, but at least they are taking it. I hope it works.

G`day George, matey I`ve been following your career for years now and you`ve always been a straight shooter. Will you continue to ask the question that Gillard won`t answer ,and that is ARE YOU GOING TO CUT BACK CONSIDERABLY ON ALL PAYMENTS TO INDONESIA,PAKISTAN ,AFGHANISTAN ,AND FIX UP OUR fLOODED COUNTRY FIRST.REMEMBER CHARITY STARTS AT HOME.Peter J Murphy Ipswich Queensland

G`day people ,I`d like to know your thoughts on WHY every house that`s been affected by flood should not be repaired ,rebuilt and fully funded by the federal government. We have billions of dollars in stock for just that reason .Will this Gillard government bite the bullet or will they just put on another tax and make the people pay whislt they continue to give billoins of dollrs for overseas aid that we all know never reaches the ones that need it the most.PeterJ Murphy Ipswich Queensland.

@ peter j murphy-Might agree/ disagree with your comments, but why the bold capitals? I can read Indonesia, Pakistan etc in regular text without bold text thank you very much. If you want to argue your point, debate it, not bully with bold capitals. It doesn’t work.

The Australian Media has a blanket over anything that is close to the truth. If you want to bring the truth to Australians then perhaps you could start by explaining WHY ? our Constitution has been removed for the past 37 years, WHY ? Julia Gillard, John Howard and many others have been charged with Treason for the past 3 years and still have not gone to court, WHY ? the United Nations is taking over our country without a referendum by the people of Australia and by our Treasonous Politicians.
WHY ? The Commonwealth Bank has been moved and registered in New York ?
If you research these Questions and bring them to the attention of the Australian people you will probably find yourself on the unemployment line. Unless you have some Guts. !!!!!

Whey hey hold up there K Watson i`ve just learnt how to operate one of these machines . I`m 70 year old and did`nt know that by using capitals I was bullying anyone.Perhaps you could tell me the correct way to post on websites .Peter J Murphy R691566 M N – H M veteran .

@ Peter J and KW….Peter J… Don’t agree with K. Watson’s assault on your errant use of the caps key. FYI Caps denote that you are shouting… Also don’t agree with your Charity starts at home line. If you are kind to someone else it usually returns two fold when you need it. If we now decide to become insular to the world how can we expect charity when we need it. And we will at some stage need a favourable trade deal. Leniency on a debt or a revoked promise. If there is an earthquake in Pakistan or any of the other disaster prone Stans I hope that australians again dig deep. I like to think that is where the term digger really comes from today!!

Sir, my humble apology to you if I have offended in any way .I suspect that K Watson whether male – female has not seen to much of life ,I wonder has K Watson ever donated blood ,placed themselves on the donor register ,helped out an old mate ,done any community work ,given their time to help the less fortunate ,been to Viet-Nam ,Indonesia or even Tasmania or maybe N S W .I suspect that K Watson is the next generation of snivel libertarians ,and future politicians .It would be interesting to know if K Watson has any other occupation other than making accusations of bullying to people they don`t know .Take care have fun ,Life is to short to worry about small minded people ,you only have one chance at .Callous old man

Maybe we can all get a grip and lay off K.Watson and all the boring generalisations being made about ‘that generation’. She merely brought a common protocol of posting to your attention and rightly so – if you had continued with the caps, you really might have copped it in here!

‘Life is to short to worry about small minded people…’, but obviously well long enough to be a smug, self congratulatory smart arse with a rather large chip on his shoulder. I have been to all those countries and a few more. Some I relished in the culture of, others I got blind drunk in for most of the time. What’s your point, man-with-no-name? I, and most other people here don’t give a rats what you do. Tarnishes the value of the act somehwat when you publicise it so shamelessly don’t you think? Twat.
