Downton Abbey falls to lowest audience for Seven but Gogglebox rises for its finale on Ten

The finale of Gogglebox on Ten at 8.30pm pulled in a metro audience of 594,000, up on its free-to-air premiere which saw 495,000 metro viewers tune in the later timeslot of 9pm, on a night when the likes of Downton Abbey and The Checkout’s audiences went backwards.

Gogglebox was the most-watched show across all the demographics, helping Ten secure an audience share of 13.4 per cent.

However Seven’s decision to move British period drama Downton Abbey to Thursdays from Sundays appears to have backfired as it pulled its lowest ever audience across the five metro markets of 640,000 at 9pm.

Nine won the night with an audience share of 20.1 per cent thanks to a strong performance by Nine News which was the only show to crack the 1m viewer mark (1.026m), with 954,000 viewers tuning in from 6.30. Seven News was watched by 921,000 viewers at 6pm, dropping to 868,000 at 6.30pm.

Seven lagged behind with a share of 17.8 per cent as the ABC settled for a share of 11.7 per cent.

On the ABC, the second outing of the ABC’s The Checkout saw its audience slide from 727,000 metro viewers to 603,000, behind Seven’s Australia: The Story of Us which grabbed a metro audience of 653,000.

Nine’s Top Gear special at 7.30pm grabbed an audience of 580,000, just beating Ten’s Modern Family which was watched by 579,000.

A second episode of Modern Family at 8pm was watched by 576,000.  The first episode of Modern Family was the second most-watched show amongst people aged 16-39 and 25-54, with the second episode the second most-watched show amongst people aged 18-49.

Downton Abbey did out-rate Nine’s The Footy Show, which kicked off at 8.50pm, and was watched by 574,000.

Seven was second for audience share on the night with 17.8 per cent audience share, while ABC got 11.7 per cent.
