Gold Coast Film Festival announces first pulp culture focused program

The Gold Coast Film Festival has announced its first full program as a pulp-culture focused event.

As previously announced, Nazi sci-fi film Iron Sky will open the festival, which runs from April 19-29 at the Australia Fair Birch Carroll & Coyle cinemas.

Closing the festival will be action film Safe, starring Jason Stratham, written and directed by Boaz Yakin.

The festival also moved from November to April to be in line with Supanova Pop Culture Expo at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from April 20-22.

The program includes Asia Pacific Screen Award winning films and nominees Buta, Mr Tree, Silent Souls and The Yellow Sea.

Other films include The King of Devil’s Island, horror film The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe, Cabin in the Woods directed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Joss Whedon and starring Chris Hemsworth, Irvine Welsh’s Ecstacy, and surf documentary A Deeper Shade of Blue by Jack McCoy.

Susie Douglas, Gold Coast City councillor said: “Each year the film industry on the Gold Coast injects upwards of $80m into the economy, and accounts for 75 per cent of all Queensland film production.”

“Gold Coast City Council has recognised the importance of film for the region, with the establishment of Film Gold Coast dedicated to the growth of this industry.”

“We are very excited about the diverse program for the 2012 Gold Coast Film Festival and the spotlight this will put on the region as the film hub for Queensland.”

Of Iron Sky’s Australian premiere at the festival, Douglas said: “It is an added bonus that it will be an international production that was filmed locally that will open the 2012 festival.”
