Gold Coast Film Festival secures Iron Sky’s Australian premiere

The Australian/German/Finnish co-production Iron Sky will have its Australian premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival as the festival’s opening film on April 19.

Iron Sky had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival where it was one of the fastest selling screenings at the festival.

The film trailer has reached 6.5 million YouTube views since the Berlin premiere. The film’s producers have had a strong presence on Facebook and used crowd-funding to help generate investment and interest.

New Holland Pictures was the Australian production company behind the film, bringing production of the film to the Gold Coast. New Holland Pictures producer Cathy Overett said: “It’s been a fabulous journey for us, being absorbed into the Iron Sky social media phenomenon. And we were delighted to bring world class production values to the film, shooting all the moonbase and spaceship interiors at the Village Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast. Having our Australian premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival will be like bringing the film home, a fitting sequel to Berlin.”

Casey Marshall, Gold Coast Film Festival director said: “This is really the perfect film for us for 2012. It fits perfectly with our move to pop culture focused programming and also marries with our core goal of supporting Queensland film makers. The film was shot right here on the Gold Coast and employed many local performers and suppliers. I am more than happy to champion this film and I’m certain opening night tickets will sell quickly. Tickets will go on sale soon so I encourage people to get in fast.”

Queensland film agency Screen Queensland was an investor in film. Meredith Garlick, the agency’s CEO said: “As one of the Gold Coast Film Festival’s sponsors, and a proud investor in Iron Sky, this is an exciting opportunity for Queenslanders to be the first Australian audience to experience this cheeky steampunk sci-fi film. Screen Queensland invested $350,000 in Iron Sky. The production created more than 130 jobs for Queensland cast and crew, and injected $3.6M production expenditure into the state’s economy in 2010-11.
