Gold FM’s Christian O’Connell to host new podcast, Stuff of Legends

Christian O’Connell, host of Gold FM’s breakfast show, is set to host a new podcast called Stuff of Legends, featuring the likes of Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Amanda Keller and Celeste Barber discussing three treasured possessions.

Yesterday, at Carat’s virtual festival Couch-ella 2020, O’Connell recorded an episode with Amanda Keller, which served as a first preview of the podcast ahead of full details being released later in the year.

“I’ve had this idea for a good couple of years as I wanted to do a show that was something different to me doing all the talking,” O’Connell said.

“I love stories and I’ve always been fascinated by how certain objects that we own, take on so much meaning to us and reflect who we are. Each brilliant episode allows guests to show a side of themselves that we’ve maybe never heard from before.

“Ricky Gervais is a great example of that and Russell Brand takes us back to his teenage years. There are many more guests to reveal and I can’t wait to share their stories.”

Since moving to Melbourne from the UK in 2018, O’Connell has made his mark on Australian breakfast radio, rising to the top of the market’s breakfast ratings pile in just over a year.

In the most recent radio ratings survey, released on 16 April – the last for the foreseeable future due to the impacts of COVID-19 on data collection and field work – O’Connell retained the title of number one FM breakfast show with a 9.4% audience share in the slot. AM stations 3AW and ABC Melbourne still remain ahead with breakfast shares of 17.3% and 11.8%, respectively.

Last month, O’Connell also started hosting a national show, The Christian O’Connell Show, going to air at 7pm on Gold FM in Melbourne, WSFM in Sydney, 97.3 FM in Brisbane, Mix 102.3 in Adelaide and 96 FM in Perth.
