Gold-winning Olympic swimmer starts first day job at Clemenger BBDO

Clemenger BBDO has confirmed the appointment of Mack Horton to the creative agency’s Melbourne office.

The Australian Olympic swimmer announced his retirement from the sport over the weekend and will today commence a role in the accounts department of Clemenger BBDO, as a business manager.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Horton said the role had come about after he had spent a few days in the agency learning what was involved.

The 27 year old told the masthead that he had not competed for a spot in the Australian swimming team for the Paris Olympics, admitting that he knew his international swimming career was over when he did not qualify at the national trials for last year’s world championships.

In a statement from Swimming Australia, Horton said: “I dearly wanted to swim in Paris but the hunger wasn’t there. I always want to give my all and I am not someone who just wants to make up the numbers, so this is the right time to step away.

“I have felt so privileged to represent Australia and wear the green and gold … I just hope Australia thinks I did them proud.

“I am so grateful for my time in swimming and in regard to legacy, I hope my teammates and the sport think that I was able to help them and the sport in some way.

“And I hope they just remember me as Mack.”

Beyond swimming, Horton’s experience extends to ambassadorship work with the likes of Optus, and presidency at the Australian Swimmers Association, which he took on in March 2023. He also holds a general business degree.

Clemenger BBDO has launched a number of new campaigns for its clients in recent months, including Great Northern, Somersby Super Crisp, Schweppes and the Victorian Transport Accident Commission.
