Gone Girl smashes Aussie box office in opening weekend

David Fincher’s Gone Girl has smashed all opposition in the weekend box office, taking in $4.696m across 401 screens with a long weekend in most states giving it an extra boost.

The film starring Ben Affleck, and based on the book by Gillian Flynn, has taken in $5.003m since its debut on Thursday.

It pushed its closest rival The Maze Runner into second place, as it made $1.993m across 313 screens, taking its total Australian box office to $12.819m.

The long weekend and finish to the school holidays gave a nice bump to the figures, with seven films in total taking more than $1m, including Gone Girl and The Maze Runner.

Dracula Untold grabbed third place in its opening weekend, taking $1.971m across 221 screens, with horror movie Annabelle not far behind taking in $1.904 across 166 screens in its opening weekend.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, now in its fourth weekend, was pushed to fifth place after taking in $1.318m, taking its total box office north of $16m.

Aussie Aussie comedy The Little Death took in $48,849 across 33 screens, taking its total takings to $175,632, while local drama The Skeleton Twins grabbed $60,472 on 21 screens.
