Google’s advertising sales team the latest hit by redundancies

Google has laid off several hundred roles globally from its advertising sales team, the tech giant has confirmed to Mumbrella.

The news was first reported by Business Insider overnight, and follows reports last week that the tech giant had cut thousands of roles in its hardware, voice-assistance and engineering teams.

In a statement shared with Mumbrella, a Google spokesperson said: “Every year we go through a rigorous process to structure our team to provide the best service to our Ads customers. We map customers to the right specialist teams and sales channels to meet their service needs. As part of this, a few hundred roles globally are being eliminated and impacted employees will be able to apply for open roles on the team or elsewhere at Google.”

According Google, several teams within the company, including it ad team Global Business Organization (GBO), will undergo a restructure in 2024 in response to the changing needs of small and medium clients.

The cuts will primarily affect Google’s Large Customer Sales (LCS) team, making way for the expansion of customer support units, including Google Customer Solutions (GCS).

LCS will continue to work with the company’s largest clients.

The move comes as Google this month has commenced the long awaited deprecation of third-party cookies.

Last week Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch reportedly cut 35 percent of its global workforce, cutting 500 roles in an effort to balance its budget, while Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios also cut “several hundred roles”.
