Greyhound expose wins top honour at Walkleys
The Four Corners investigation into animal cruelty within Australia’s greyhound racing industry has won the top prize at Australia’s major journalism awards, the Walkleys.
The ABC team of Caro Meldrum-Hanna, Sam Clark and Max Murch won the Gold Walkley Award for “Making a Killing” which examined the illegal practice of live baiting.
The Walkley judges said: “’Making a Killing’ exposes greyhound racing’s ugly secret. It took bravery, tenacity and months of planning in three states to produce a jaw-dropping report that has shaken not just the greyhound code but the entire racing industry.”
While “Making a Killing” picked up the investigative journalism Walkley and the Gold Walkley, it did not win in the sports journalism category, losing out to Chris Garry’s reports on the suicide deaths of five young men who held NRL contracts “When a Game Becomes Life and Death”.
Media personality Derryn Hinch noted the fact in a series of Tweets during the awards ceremony, calling out the sports judges for not recognising the Greyhounds story.
The Walkleys, in their 60th year, were presented at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne.

It would be nice to know if “Making a Killing” was entered into the sports story section. If it was not then it was not overlooked.
