Guardian Australia appoints Stan Grant as Indigenous affairs editor

stangrantGuardian Australia has appointed Stan Grant to the newly-created role of Indigenous affairs editor following on from Grant picking up the Walkley Award for coverage of indigenous affairs for his columns for the publication.

Emily Wilson, editor at Guardian Australia, said in a statement: “”I’m so pleased that Stan Grant is joining us at Guardian Australia as our Indigenous affairs editor. After many years focusing on foreign affairs Stan has decided to turn his attention reporting on his own people, in his own country. We’re delighted to be working with him at such an exciting turning point in his career.”

Grant has worked at Sky News as its international editor since 2013. Prior he spent 11 years working for CNN based in Hong Kong, Beijing and the Middle East. Grant has also worked at Macquarie Radio Network, ABC TV, SBS and Seven.

Grant also presents a current affairs program for National Indigenous Television.

“For many people indigenous Australia remains a foreign place. I see my role as a foreign correspondent in my own country. It is an enormous privilege to bring the stories of my people to readers everywhere. This is a crucial time in our history and a time when Australians are telling me they want to listen,” Grant said in a statement.

This new appointment follows a string of new hires by Guardian Australia in recent months, including Steph Harmon as Guardian Australia’s Culture editor.

Grant’s appointment is effective immediately.
