Guardian Australia managing director Dan Stinton to speak at Mumbrella Publish plus Publish Awards launch

Mumbrella has launched the 2019 Publish conference and Publish Awards, with the Guardian Australia’s managing director Dan Stinton confirmed as one of the first speakers.

In an industry where newsrooms are shrinking, Stinton will take to the stage to discuss the Guardian’s new mixed revenue model, how the publisher has doubled its revenue over the past three years, and how it’s grown its unique audiences 29% month-on-month to 5.38m.

The session will unpack how a business model which doesn’t solely revolve around advertising can be successful and why the Guardian believes it can win with a business model focused on reader revenue.

In addition, senior industry leaders including Bauer Media’s Story54 general manager, Jane Waterhouse, News Corp Australia’s executive director of content marketing, Simon Smith, Edge’s commercial director and partner, Fergus Stoddart, and Virtue’s head of brand, Alex Light, will join a panel discussion on whether publishers should be the new creative agency.

In an age where content can come from anywhere, publishers have had to fight hard to maintain their audiences and capitalise on their strengths. The panel will explore if publishers are becoming a threat to ad agencies and if this new revenue opportunity is a serious one for the industry.

In addition,  Mumbrella Publish will also feature a panel session on Apple News+ with Pacific Magazines CEO, Gereurd Roberts, and Private Media’s publisher and Crikey general manager, Tamsin Creed.

Roberts and Creed will address Apple News+ and discuss what it means for the industry, who should be signing up and what the industry can learn about subscriptions from the tech giant’s news play.

Meanwhile, the 2019 Mumbrella Publish Awards are now open for entries with 31 categories across podcasting, publishing, branded content and journalism.

After a record year in 2018, the awards return with categories including Best Podcast, Brand of the Year, Publication of the Year, Publish Leader of the Year, Publish Award for Innovation, Best Use of Video and many more.

Last year’s Publish Awards were the biggest yet

The first deadline for entries is June 28, 2019. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on September 19, at Dolton House Sydney, after the Mumbrella Publish conference.
