The Guardian launches new VR experience showing life from baby’s point of view

The Guardian has launched a new global virtual reality experience, First Impressions, which allows viewers to see life from an infant’s perspective.

Created by the masthead’s UK team, First Impressions takes viewers on the developmental journey of a baby, starting from their blurred and black and white vision right through to when their eyes align.

Built by the Guardian’s in-house VR team, this project is one of six which is set to be rolled out through Daydream View.

The project aims to highlight and examine the importance of social interaction throughout a child’s development and is voiced by Charles Nelson, PhD, professor of pediatrics at Harvard as he talks viewers through how the brain is developing both behaviourally and socially.

Francesca Panetta, executive editor, virtual reality, Guardian News & Media, said: “First Impressions is a beautiful portrayal of the first six months of life and gives viewers a real insight into a period of crucial development which we have all experienced but aren’t able to recall. It’s another example of the Guardian’s innovative storytelling through VR, using this technology as a tool to bring new experiences to life for viewers.”

Charles Nelson PhD, professor of pediatrics at Harvard, said: “First Impressions has much to commend it for anyone interested in infant development.  The ability to explore the world through the eyes of a baby offers an unprecedented opportunity to really understand how they see and experience the world.”
