Hamish & Andy reclaim title of most popular local podcast
The Australian Podcast Ranker has revealed Hamish Blake and Andy Lee’s podcast ‘Hamish & Andy’ is back on top of the local podcast market.
Hamish & Andy has overtaken News Corp’s From The Newsroom, which topped the local list last month. Both podcasts remain behind international production Stuff You Should Know, which first took the top spot in March when international titles joined the list.
Schwartz Media’s 7am was up two spots to fourth overall, while the podcast version of Australian Radio Network’s (ARN) Sydney breakfast radio show ‘The Kyle & Jackie O Show’ is down one spot to fifth.
Alan Jones, who on Tuesday announced his imminent retirement from the airwaves, climbed nine places to 16th overall for the podcast version of his 2GB radio show. Against only local podcasts, Jones was 12th.
Australian radio show catch-up podcasts accounted for 11 of the ranker’s top 20 most downloaded and listened to podcasts in the All-Australian list.
Another former radio personality, Em Rusciano, debuted on the list at number 85 with Emsolation. Rusciano previously hosted the 2Day FM Breakfast radio program in Sydney alongside various hosts including Harley Breen, Ed Kavalee and Grant Denyer.
Titles from Wondery joined the mix this month, allowing The Dollop with Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds to debut in 15th.
Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) said downloads of the top 100 podcasts hit a new average weekly high of 5.5 million, up 14% on the previous result, while the Australian-focused list reached 3.9 million, up 10%.
“Australians are enjoying a wide variety of podcasts while in lockdown, with comedy, self-education, radio catch-up and sports-oriented podcasts performing strongly, despite virtually no sport being played,” said Joan Warner, CEO of CRA.
The reporting period for this ranker was 30 March to 3 May, while the last list covered 17 February to 15 March.
The Australian Podcast Ranker was launched in October in a bid to increase awareness and advertising revenue for the sector, by providing advertisers with independent, comparative data on podcast performance. It is published monthly by Triton Digital in accordance with the IAB Tech Lab’s Podcast Measurement Guidelines.
Participating publishers in the Australian Ranker include Southern Cross Austereo, News Corp Australia, Nova, Schwartz Media, TOFOP Productions, SEN / Crocmedia, The Parent Brand, Australian Radio Network, Nine, ARN/iHeartMedia, Wavelength Creative, Stitcher, Wondery, and NBC News.
