iHeartPodcast’s Stuff You Should Know soars to the top of Australia’s Podcast Ranker as international titles join the mix

The Australian Podcast Ranker has been given a shake-up with international titles from iHeartPodcast Network and Stitcher joining the mix.

The change sees previous chart toppers Hamish & Andy from PodcastOne slip to eighth place, as Australian Radio Network / iHeartPodcast Network Australia’s Stuff You Should Know takes the top position.

The top 10 is now a mix of local and international content, with My Favourite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations taking out third and seventh positions respectively. Locally, News Corp’s From The Newsroom was in second, Nova’s Kate, Tim & Marty climbed to fourth, ARN’s The Kyle & Jackie O show jumped to fifth, Schwartz Media’s 7am came in at sixth, Sky News – News Bulletin slipped to ninth, and The Howie Games came in at 10th.

ARN’s commercial product and audio partnerships director Corey Layton said despite the new system pushing some local content down the ladder, it makes sense for the Ranker to actually reflect what’s going on in audio.

“By having it international podcasts in the Ranker, it’s representative of a lot of what our listening is. If you think about what are your favourite songs, or what are your favourite movies, chances are while there will absolutely be Australian content in your answer, but there will also be international content, and that’s what happens with podcasts. It’s not all Australian only, and so like the top box office chart, or the top music chart, it makes sense for it to be representative of what Australians’ tastes are,” he told Mumbrella.

Stuff You Should Know, he added, is an “incredibly big” podcast, which deserves to be on the charts.

Stuff You Should Know is now number one

“Its scale is tremendous. And for Australian brands to be able to integrate into that show and just hit Australian only ears is now the reality of what’s possible. And that’s really exciting,” he said.

The international podcasts included can all carry Australian geo-targeted advertising.

CEO of Commercial Radio Australia Joan Warner shared a similar sentiment to Layton, noting the Ranker will now hold more valuable information for advertisers and publishers.

“The ranker shows Australians have a diverse and growing range of interests when it comes to podcast listening,” she said.

“We’re pleased to welcome the new publishers with US titles to the top 100, so we can better reflect what’s popular and trending, which is valuable information for both publishers and advertisers.”

Podcasts will be a key feature of Mumbrella’s Audioland program on 5 May in Sydney. The program already includes a session titled ‘The power of personality: Building an audio brand listeners love’, and another about whether branded podcasts really work. Earlybird tickets are still available
