Harold Mitchell bio published next month
Media buyer Harold Mitchell will next month publish his biography, Living Large.
According to publisher Melbourne University Press:
“Living Large reveals Harold’s loves – family, a great business deal, a brilliantly produced TV commercial – and dislikes – disloyalty, laziness and business yobbos, and presents guidance for young business executives trying to make it in the jungle.”
Mitchell is founder of the Mitchell Communication Group, Australia’s largest media buying point, with billings in excess of $1bn.
According to MUP, the characters featuring in the book – subtitled “from sawmiller’s son to multi million dollar man” – will include Kerry Packer, Kerry Stokes, Gough Whitlam, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, Dudley Moore and folk singer Odetta.
i’ll be buying the shrinking man’s book, for the war stories alone.

For those of us who are “of a certain age” who grew up in the industry and watched the paralle “Rise and Rise Of Harold Mitchell”, it will make for a “must read” book. And for the next generations coming through; even for some of those who, by popular reckoning, “have already made it now”, it will be “a compulsive read. of a ‘must have’ book”.
Mitchell’s training and mentoring of raw young staff is legendary; all he initially looked for was a quick mind, willingnes to learn and put in the ‘work’. and that key requirement he was always adament about – loyalty. And for those lucky enough to be chosen to work inside his growing empire; they were lucky indeed to have a man of such great personal qualities overseeing their work and personal development.
I, like many young men of that era, as a raw young rep from Southdown Press, was lucky to have his agency on my “call” list. And in so doing was, over the years, fortunate enough to learn a lesson or three from “The Great Man”, something I will perpetually be indebted for . And to be able to get an ‘insider’s account” on other key people of the past 40 years, let alone an insight into some of his famous philanthropic activities and philosophies, is a rare opportunity; one not to be missed by any student of society let alone those coming though now who want to really leave their mark on industry and life across the board. The world is much richer for his life’s work, and this book should be on the “must read” list for Universities, TAFE Colleges and all theatres of learning nationally. Indeed; it will make “the perfect gift” from parents and granparents alike for their next generation too, as the homilies and lessons it contains will be timeless and unarguable.
