Home grown shows help Seven to supremacy in 2009’s top 50 shows so far

Seven’s TV shows dominate in an analysis of Australia’s 50 most watched series so far this year.

According to data prepared by the network, Seven has 23 shows in the top 50 followed by Nine with 16 and Ten with eight. The ABC has just three shows in the top 50, while SBS has none.

The analysis is based on data from OzTam covering Australia’s five metro TV audiences.

In the top ten TV shows, Seven’s dominance is even more pronounced, with seven shows in the top 10.

However, the biggest average audience of the year has been for Nine’s Underbelly, the only show to average more than two million metro viewers. Close behind was Seven’s Packed To The Rafters, with an average metro audience of just over 1.8m.

Every one of the top ten shows was Australian produced.

Meanwhile, the importance of The Gruen Transfer to the ABC in reaching large audiences is underlined by it being one of just three shows from the national broadcaster to make it into the top 50. The others were Spicks and Specks and the British drama Midsomer Murders.

The rundown also serves to put the success of MasterChef Australia into perspective – so far it is only the 34th most watched show. However, it does appear to have been growing its audience – last night it rated 1.5m.
