How Evermore rocked the Nova party from behind the curtain

It’s lucky for Nova that the Sydney radio station is known for its love of a laugh.

Because last night’s party to celebrate the station’s new breakfast lineup of Merrick Watts, Ricky-Lee Coulter and Scott Dooley had plenty of unintended comedy.

The elaborately staged party at Carriageworks saw Nova bigwigs talk to the crowd from three different stages before a surprise performance from Melbourne-based band Evermore.

Unfortunately, when the big moment came for the band to burst into their first song, the curtain they had been hidden behind failed to drop.

Much like the scene in Spinal Tap when guitarist Derek Smalls couldn’t escape from his cocoon, Evermore played on from behind the curtain. Eventually staff pulled back the corners of the curtains, giving photographers and guests the opportunity to take it in turns to walk up to the stage and peep inside at the band.

One of the band members bravely told the audience: “Welcome to the Evermore radio experience,” before another added: “Someone just got fired.”

Half way through the band’s second song, the stage crew was finally able to drop the curtain, generating the biggest applause of the night.

But after the recent scam which saw the station con rival stations into playing their ad, Dr Mumbo had a sneaking suspicion that last night’s farce was another prank. However, Dr Mumbo is assured that during intensive rehearsals yesterday afternoon the curtain had dropped right on cue every time.

Earlier on, station manager David Borean revealed that late last year when Lachlan Murdoch’s Illyria took a 50% stake in Nova’s parent company DMG Radio Australia, the preparations for his arrival were akin to a royal visit.

Borean told the audience: “I’ve never seen more people vacuuming, more frocks being frocked up, more hairstyles being done.
