How to make your work from home stint a success: Tips from a PR agency who do it every day
With COVID-19 prompting many businesses to change their working arrangements, some employees and organisations are finding themselves overwhelmed and underprepared. So how can you set yourself up for success in uncertain times? The Comms Department’s Bec Brown – who has been working remotely for eight years – shares her tips for success, to ensure you and your teams are as productive, creative, consistent and mentally healthy as possible.
A lot of the country’s professionals are now officially WFH – working from home. And while these are unusual times, you can still be ‘business as usual’.
I’ve been running our PR and crisis comms agency The Comms Department for eight years and we’ve never had a ‘traditional’ office. That’s right, all staff work remotely.
With a team that spans Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, we work with some of Australia’s biggest media, entertainment, travel and lifestyle brands and we’ve always worked from home (or from hotel rooms when we need to travel and occasionally from our clients’ offices).

Great advice – many thanks for sharing, Bec.
Great advice Bec, I like to use a discussion planner, if you think of things you need to ask a colleague, write them down, when you have enough for a discussion, send them a note saying here is a list of things I’d like to discuss, when would it be convenient for you. Science says a disruption can cost you 11 minutes to get back into what you were originally doing. 5 disruptions a day is almost an hour.
A really good refresher on how to make the most of this.
Love this! Thank you for sharing at such an important time.
Great advise and tips, thank you!
Thank you Bec, thank you for being so practical and with a sense of humour too. I’m popping on my Cats cap now!

Wish I too looked like this when working from home ***puts on shapeless clothes and shovels biscuits in to mouth***!
