Mumbrella and IAA to host breakfast focusing on artificial intelligence

Mumbrella and the International Advertising Association are to host a breakfast next month discussing the impact of artificial intelligence on the world of marketing.

University of New South Wales artificial intelligence expert Professor Toby Walsh will be part of the panel discussion.

Walsh: AI fan – and critic

The event, which is taking place at Pier One Sydney Harbour on August 31, aims to tackle the big issues in the world of AI.

Walsh is a leading expert in the field of AI, having recently been named in the inaugural Knowledge Nation 100, the one hundred “rock stars” of Australia’s digital revolution. He is one of the world’s biggest advocates of AI, but also one of its harshest critics.

In the last year, he has appeared in TV and the radio on the ABC, BBC, Channel 7, Channel 9, Channel 10, CCTV, DW, NPR, RT, SBS, and VOA, along with numerous local radio stations. He also writes frequently for print and online media, and his book “It’s Alive!: AI from the Logic Piano to Killer Robots” will be published July 31 2017.

Back in 2015, Walsh penned an open letter about the dangers of autonomous weapons which was signed by 1,000 AI experts including Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking and Steve Woznia.

Walsh said: “Artificial intelligence is our biggest problem but it is our only solution. There are insurmountable issues on a global scale and the only hand we have to play is AI.”

Other speakers at the event include Dev Mookerjee, technical executive for IBM’s AI computer Watson, Kirsten Riolo, director of the Social Media Exchange at Ipsos in Australia and Douglas Nicol, founder of messaging based social media startup On Message. The panel will be moderated by the IAA’s Australian president Adam Donnelley.
