Former Cosmos editor Wilson da Silva behind launch of new science magazine Ingenuity

The former editor of science title Cosmos magazine has returned to publishing with the launch of a new magazine focused on engineering research, Ingenuity.

Wilson da Silva, who sold his share of Cosmos magazine when it moved to Melbourne in 2013,  has partnered with the University of New South Wale’s Dean of Engineering Mark Hoffman for the new print title.

Ingenuity magazine is one of a number of initiatives by UNSW Engineering created to build the faculty’s academic and research reputation.

The magazine’s publisher will be Refraction Media’s Karen Taylor-Bown, while the managing editor will be Refraction’s Heather Catchpole. Da Silva will take on the role of editor-in-chief.

Da Silva, who is also the faculty’s senior communications advisor, said: “Quality long-form journalism in science and technology is hard to come by in Australia.

“There’s a wealth of great research stories to tell at UNSW, and we hope that everyone, including the general public, will enjoy the quality writing in Ingenuity and the great stories of Australian research excellence it has to tell.”

Other than a message for the university, there are no ads in the publication. A digital version of Ingenuity magazine is also available.

The magazine will features science writers, design and photography, focusing on the Faculty’s work in areas such as quantum computing, bionic vision, solar energy, water and city environments, artificial intelligence, biomedical instrumentation, robotics and cyber security.
