InDaily joins Press Council as newest member

South Australian digital news publication InDaily has joined the Australian Press Council.

The announcement:

InDaily, a South Australian digital news publication, has joined the Australian Press Council as a new member.

This adds to the list of more than 900 print and online media outlets that have committed themselves to the Press Council’s high standards of practice and its mission to advocate for press freedom and freedom of speech.

InDaily is owned by Solstice Media. In November 2010 it replaced The Independent Weekly, which was founded in 2004. At present, InDaily has around 84,000 subscribers and 225,000 unique visitors on its online platform.

InDaily’s website states that their editorial team, made up of seven staff members, “investigates issues from a unique South Australian perspective”.

The Editor, David Washington, began his career in journalism 30 years ago and has been a political reporter, public servant and small business operator.
“We’re very pleased to be joining the Press Council, which is a logical step for InDaily after establishing ourselves as an important part of South Australia’s media landscape,” Washington said. “Our membership sends a message that our digital-only, independently-owned local news site is an important, responsible and accountable member of the media community.”

This latest member is another demonstration of Australian Press Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting smaller local online publications.

“We’re genuinely excited about InDaily joining the Council,” Executive Director John Pender said. “This is a member from South Australia that is not a masthead belonging to big mainstream publishing company.

“It’s important to have a diversity of voices, regions and perspectives represented and important that the Press Council continues to expand its membership in the online-only area.”

The Australian Press Council was established in 1976 and is responsible for promoting good standards of media practice, community access to information of public interest, and freedom of expression through the media. Press Council membership encompasses most of the major newspaper, magazine and online publishers in Australia, accounting for approximately 95 per cent of circulation.
