Instacannes: Sights from the Cannes Lions
Cannes offers a bewildering array of sights and experiences, so The Hallway has set up #Instacannes to offer a visual guide to what goes on on the Cote D’Azure.
Sunday night, 7pm. A wet drizzle that only Europe can deliver – and we’ve arrived in Cannes. Rain was definitely not in the brochure.
A short cab ride later and we find ourselves at Le Moulins de Mougin to judge the Marketing Society’s ‘Pioneering Spirit Awards’ over a typically French dinner. The gloom of the drizzle faded as the debating kicked in and the wine flowed. And therein lies the essence of what makes Cannes so goddam good: Superbly smart people from all around the world passionately debating brilliant work, facilitated by insanely rich food and plenty of wine.
The next day the sun returned and the Riviera was back to the sparkling golden hues we know and love it for. A somewhat rambling interview with Spike Jonze perhaps didn’t deliver to expectations, but a gathering of independent agencies from all around the world re-ignited the passion, and the debate, courtesy of thenetworkone. From there it was over to Google Sandbox – an incredible brand experience earning endorsers left, right and centre.
The day ended, and the night started, with the Aussie delegates gathering for drinks at the Grand Hotel. It always suprises me, but I catch up with more of our industry colleagues in Cannes than I ever see in Sydney.
Which again reinforces the magic of Cannes: Every conversation, every interaction, is a learning opportunity. Go into it with your ears primed and your mind open and you will always leave a more informed and more interesting marketer.
