Instagram extends photo carousel offering to users

Instagram will now allow users to share multiple photos and videos in a single post on its application.

The latest announcement by the global photo sharing platform comes almost two years after it unveiled ‘carousel ads’, the same offering for advertisers, which it likened at the time to multi-page print campaigns.

“Carousel ads give brands more flexibility in telling their stories by allowing people who view their ads to swipe left to see additional images and link to a website of the brand’s choice,” the announcement at the time said.

“One way to look at it is carousel ads bring the potential of multi-page print campaigns to mobile phones – with the added benefit of taking people to a website to learn more.”

Instagram’s new offering will give users the option of sharing up to 10 photos from a particular experience.

While Instagram stories offer the chance for multiple photos from one event to be uploaded, Instagram’s new feature works like an album, allowing users to upload all images in one post which  followers can look at by swiping over the post.

In an announcement on its blog, Instagram wrote: “With this update, you no longer have to choose the single best photo or video from an experience you want to remember.

“When uploading to your feed, you’ll see a new icon to select multiple photos and videos. It’s easy to control exactly how your post will look. You can tap and hold to change the order, apply a filter to everything at once or edit one by one. These posts have a single caption and are square-only for now,” Instagram explained.

The new update is available for iOS and Android.
