Ipsos Iris: 20.3m people accessed a news website or app in February

IAB and Ipsos Iris have released the second set of monthly data under the new measurement system, revealing that 20.3 million people in Australia used a news website or app in February, up 0.2% on the previous month.

The figure was however lower than other online categories, including social media use (20.9 million), search (20.9 million), technology (20.8 million, retail and commerce (20.6 million) and entertainment (20.5 million).

In addition, Ipsos Irisis found that people spend upwards of five hours per month in February, or 18 minutes a day, consuming news content, including general news as well as broader news content including weather, sport, lifestyle, entertainment, and business news. People aged between 55-64 spent the most time consuming news content, at more than eight hours during February.

The IAB Australia-endorsed digital measurement currency launched last month, providing monthly data on the 21 million Australians aged 14+ who access digital content and services across smartphone, PC/laptop and tablet devices.

The February data also found that Australians spent an average of 3.5 hours per day, or 94 hours in the month online on a PC/laptop, smartphone, or tablet device –  a decline of 12% from January.
