It: Chapter 2 knocks off Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, earning $5.9m in its opening weekend

It: Chapter 2 debuted at the top of the box office over the weekend, knocking off Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The horror film is the sequel to the 2017 adaptation of Steven King’s novel It. Chapter 2 took in $5.9m from 501 screens, down from the first film which made $7 million in its opening weekend.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood experienced a 48% drop from the previous weekend, receiving $1.385m from 438 screens. After three weeks at number one, the film’s running total has reached $18m.

Disney’s The Lion King remake held firm at number three, after nine weeks at the box office. Over the weekend the film added $706,015 to its running total of $62.5m after showing across 283 screens. The Lion King is now the fourth highest grossing film in Australia, shifting ahead of Avengers: Infinity War. To catch up to Avengers: Endgame, the film would have to earn another $22m at the box office.

Action flick Angel Has Fallen earned $688,566 over the weekend from 261 screens, a drop of 52% from the previous weekend. Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, received just $366,979 from 198 screens.

Also debuting this week was American comedy, The Farewell, which sees a young woman and her family organise a farewell gathering for their terminally ill grandmother. The film, which stars actor and rapper Awkwafina, earned just $332,318 from 64 screens.

After debuting last week in 17th place with $97,612, Australian horror film The Nightingale earned $67,578 from 32 screens. And Adam Goodes documentary, The Australian Dream, earned $83,346 in its third week, making its current box office total $511,219.
