ITV Studios Australia launches long-term crew training program with Screen Careers

ITV Studios Australia and Screen Careers have launched a new training program to develop future Australian screen crew talent.

The announcement:

ITV Studios Australia, in partnership with national screen training organisation Screen Careers, has launched an exciting new long-term training program. The program will see four crew members join the ITV Studios Australia Crew Academy, gaining a minimum of three production credits, personalised industry training delivered in-house and by Screen Careers, and the skills needed to launch long-term careers in key crew roles. It is part of a commitment to future-proof the screen industry by providing tangible career pathways for crew and addressing specific production skills needs in the sector.

The innovative ITV Studios Australia Crew Academy will give aspiring Australian crew six months of paid training and real-world experience across multiple productions, as well as providing additional professional skills training for many more crew and supervisors working across these projects.

The Australian Government’s Location Offset allows qualifying productions to meet new mandatory minimum training requirements through the development of a long-term training program across two or more productions, representing a broader, multi-project investment in screen industry skills development. ITV’s smash hit series I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! UK, which will be filming its latest season in northern NSW later this year, will be the springboard for the training program which will also operate across other major ITV Studios productions.

Designed to meet Location Offset eligibility through a structured workforce development program, the Crew Academy will target high-demand roles in post-production, production finance, and production office, and will also provide leadership and management training to crew and supervisors across the Offset production.

David Mott, managing director of ITV Studios Australia, said:
“We’re committed to creating inclusive, skilled and future-ready crews – and this partnership is a powerful way to do that. Crew Academy will not only train people to step confidently into crew roles, but also help build the leadership skills and team culture that keep them there. It’s a model we believe in and one we hope to grow.”

“This is exactly what the Location Offset was designed for – building lasting capability in the Australian screen workforce,” said Esther Coleman-Hawkins, CEO of Screen Careers. “We’re proud to partner with ITV Studios Australia to deliver an ambitious program that has the opportunity to go beyond short-term attachments and prepare people for real, sustainable careers. It’s training that works because it’s embedded in production and provides the tangible outcomes (credits!) that are highly valued by our industry.”

Each participant in the program will receive six months of paid, work-based learning, a tailored training plan, and dedicated support from a highly experienced Screen Careers Training Manager. The program also includes cultural safety and wellbeing initiatives, and nationally recognised professional skills training to set participants up for long-term success.

Three of the trainee roles are now open for applications: two edit assistant positions and a mid-career development opportunity for a production coordinator. Recruitment for a fourth role, assistant production accountant, is already underway. All roles are slated to begin from August 2025. Additionally, three attachments (camera assistant, lighting assistant, sound assistant) will undergo training and upskilling specifically on I’m A Celebrity UK.

This is the first long-term training program managed by Screen Careers and the aim is for it to become a model for future long-term industry partnerships that will boost crew training across Australia. The organisation is already working on a number of Location Offset productions around the country, providing high-quality crew training and recruitment services and managing the complex paperwork required by production companies to ensure they qualify for the Location Offset.
