James Chessell appointed as Fairfax’s group executive editor, Australian Metro Publishing
Fairfax Media has appointed James Chessell as its group executive editor of Australian Metro Publishing.
Chessell was previously the national editor of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age with responsibilities spanning federal politics, business and world coverage.
Chris Janz, managing director of Australian Metro Publishing at Fairfax, said in a statement: “James is a journalist and editor of remarkable talent. He’s one of Australia’s best business journalists with extensive international experience and an insider’s knowledge of the local and global political landscape.
“James brings a new energy to our newsroom leadership. He will be unrelenting in pursuing our strategic mission to deliver agenda-setting journalism that sets us apart and is valued by our readers. I’m confident this will allow us to continue growing our subscriber and engaged reader base, while always safeguarding the editorial independence of our titles.”
Chessell has also held roles as a Europe correspondent and deputy editor of business at the Australian Financial Review.
“The metro mastheads have a long and proud history of producing quality, independent and agenda-setting journalism. Faith in many public institutions is not at record highs making it more important than ever we continue to break news, produce insightful comment and analysis and write about the issues of importance to our audiences,” Chessell said.
So News is finally cutting its bureaucracy while Fairfax adds a layer. We have wonder whether Hywood would be better suited in the public service. Certainly not behaving like a company that has to reinvent its business.

A very long time ago, when the SMH had hundreds of reporters and The Age had hundreds of reporters and the AFR had maybe a hundred reporters and there was The National Times and so on, Max Suich had a title like this one. Max was very good at lunch. Not very good at getting yelled at by Keating. Or chatting up UK newspaper proprietors. I wonder who Chessell has lunch with? Cato? Or Clegg?
