James Courtney and Supercars back free bowel cancer screening campaign

Supercars and driver James Courtney are urging Australians aged 45 to 74 to take a free bowel screening test as part of a new partnership the former has with the Australian Government.

The announcement:

Veteran Supercars driver James Courtney is encouraging people to give themselves a tune up by completing the free bowel cancer screening kit if you’re aged between 45 and 74.

Supercars is partnering with the Australian Government to encourage eligible Australians to ‘Get2it’ by taking a free, and potentially lifesaving, bowel screening test.

“My father was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2017 but luckily he was able to beat it as 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated if they are found early,” James Courtney said.

“My father has been one of my biggest supporters in everything I do and particularly in my Supercars career. I’m so thankful it was caught early and he was able to beat it.

“Bowel cancer is Australia’s second deadliest cancer, and I would urge anyone who is eligible to take the test, to do it.

“If not for you, for your family and people who rely on you,” James said.

As of 1 July 2024, people as young as 45 can opt into the free National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.

“I have just turned 45 myself and I’ve ordered the kit and sent it back already because looking after my health is a priority for me,” James said.

Federal Health, Disability and Ageing Minister Mark Butler said, “We know early detection saves lives—and this partnership with Supercars brings that lifesaving message to the front of the grid.

“Just like in racing, timing is everything. I urge every Australian to take the test when it arrives, because the most important race is the one for your health,” Minister Butler said.

People aged 45 to 49 can join James in requesting their first bowel cancer screening kit either online or by calling 1800 627 701. Those aged 50–74 will continue to receive their free bowel screening kit in the mail every two years.

As part of the Supercars partnership, lifesaving information will be shared at race events and Supercars will continue to encourage fans online to order a new kit if they have lost their kit or it has expired.

Supercars have released their first video in support of the partnership featuring James Courtney. Additional content on the partnership can be found on Supercars’ channels.
