The announcement:

Melbourne, July 15, 2010: UM and McCann Erickson in Melbourne and Tokyo have been appointed as communications partner agencies for the Japan Tourism Authority preceding the break of a campaign drawing attention to Japan as a tourist destination. The campaign, which will carry a strong digital component, aims to familiarise Aussies with Japan’s cultural attractions and the opportunities for a unique vacation experience.

UM Melbourne and McCann Erickson will partner to showcase many facets of Japan tourism – including its cutting-edge fashion and amazing food, to its leading tourist destinations and world-class ski resorts. Part of the campaign will include specially-staged consumer-focused events in Sydney and Melbourne.

“Strong digital strategy and clear experiential concepts to impress consumers were the keys to this win,” said UM Melbourne managing director Peter Butler. “While there is a good level of awareness of Japan among Australian travellers, the campaign later this year will heighten people’s interest in a Japan holiday and accelerate visitor numbers.

The campaign is expected to begin in October 2010.
