JCDecaux proposes upgrade of 38 Telstra payphones on Sydney footpaths

Out-of-home company JCDecaux has lodged a development plan to upsize 38 Telstra payphones around Sydney to include digital advertising signage panels with City of Sydney.

The old Telstra payphones were installed in 1983, but JCDecaux’s proposed upgrade will include a digital screen at the front and third-party digital advertising signage at the rear.

Of all assets included in the upgrade, only four have existing scrolling advertising.

To accommodate these new features, the new payphone cabinet will increase by 25cm. JCDecaux has conducted a visual impact analysis with Urbaine Design Group.

A JCDecaux spokesperson said the company will focus on increasing the height rather than the width to reduce possible pedestrian impacts.

“Most of the locations are in non-pedestrian thoroughfares within the lines of other existing street furniture such as benches, trees, outdoor cafes, and bins so as not to impede pedestrian flow,” the spokesperson said.

The proposal is public on the City of Sydney planning portal and is open for submission until 16 January 2023.

The proposal came as City of Sydney reviews QMS’ street furniture after Sydneysiders complained of its size.

A QMS spokesperson said in October: “The City of Sydney is working with QMS to review the placement of a select number of assets. This will entail the removal/relocation of those that may pose a significant negative impact to pedestrian movement.”
