Jill Meagher murder prompts Melbourne media firms to ramp up safety measures

A number of Melbourne media companies are ramping up safety measures for female staff following the murder of Jill Meagher in the suburb of Brunswick.

Southern Cross Austereo, which is located in South Melbourne, is giving staff the option to take self-defence classes. Since the company’s radio stations, which include Fox FM, require some staff to work late night shift work, the company deemed the safety measures necessary.

SCA’s Melbourne general manager Cathy Thomas, told Mumbrella: “The safety of our team members is a major priority – not just for myself, but for the entire management team here at Southern Cross Austereo. We’ve got an incredibly dedicated team, and we’re committed to ensuring their safety in and around the office.”

“In light of the recent events and to bolster skills and confidence, in particular for the girls in our team, we’re in the process of organising a series of self-defence classes with the team from Fusion Martial Arts for our Melbourne office,” she said.

MCM Entertainment, a media, production and digital firm based on Goodwood Street in Richmond, has plans to install more lighting in its car park and increase the coverage of CCTV monitoring.

The death of ABC production worker Jill Meagher has been heavily covered by the local and national press in the week since her body was discovered 50km from Melbourne’s CBD.
