Joe Talcott departs News Limited and AANA
Joe Talcott – one of the most high profile marketers in Australia – is to depart News Limited after nearly seven years. His last day is tomorrow.
Talcott was group director of marketing for five years before moving into the role of chief creative about a year ago.
He said of his stint at News: “It’s been a spectacular time for me.”
He said he would be taking a short break before deciding his next move. Asked whether he had an interest in doing another big role – whether media, marketing or at an agency if one came up – he said: “I reckon I do.”
Talcott has also stepped down as chairman of the Australian Association of National Advertisers, a role he served in for more than three years. Deputy chair Inese Kingsmill, corporate marketing director at Telstra, will assume the chair of the association in an acting capacity.
CEO Scott McClellan said: “Joe has served more than three years as chairman. During this time, AANA membership has grown by over 15% and the Association has tackled several challenging industry and regulatory issues. Under his chairmanship, AANA has forged healthy working relationships throughout the advertising, marketing and media industry.”
Prior to News Limited, Talcott spent a lengthy portion of his career in marketing roles with McDonald’s. He has also worked at three different ad agencies.
Talcott appears at Mumbrella Question Time:
For the record, in the five and a bit years I’ve been writing about the media and marketing industry in Australia, I don’t think I’ve come across somebody in such a high profile position who is so consistently likeable – and universally liked – as Joe. He’s the best evidence we have that it’s possible to be a good guy and hold down a big job.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
Well said Tim, couldn’t agree more. All the best for your next move Joe!

i concur 100% with you Tim, I first met Joe outside the industry (while on holidays, actually) and can confirm that he is the real deal – an authentic nice guy with a stack of top-shelf marketing experience. I have every confidence that he will land on his feet.

I’ll second that.

Tim, fully endorse your sentiments. His support for all in the industry and his enthusiasm to see it develop, along with wanting to encourage young professionals, including considering ways they can stay in the industry is to be applauded. He will be missed, so while he deserves a break, hope it won’t be for too long!

Thirded.
I met Joe when he was kind enough to take part in the “Telling Lies to Idiots” ethics debate at Mumbrella 360. He’s a man of great integrity and intelligence, as well as being deeply charming to boot.
All the best Joe – look forward to hearing about the next bigger and better gig…

Joe Talcott has been a wonderful ambassador for the Australian Advertising industry and has done a tremendous job as the Chairman of the AANA over the past 3 years and led the association through some interesting times. I was honoured to serve as his deputy. It takes guts and commitment to take on roles such as chair of the AANA and the industry is better as a result of Joe’s leadership. Most people don’t get to see the issues that Joe would have had to deal with in this capacity – he has strenuously advocated for a free commercial media and the maintenance of a self-regulated media environment. Thanks for standing up Joe – you have set a tremendous example for the industry. MHB

For the past three years Joe has been my chairman and closest confidant at AANA. His contribution of time, ideas, and energy has been enormous and invaluable. His guidance and judgement on several sensitive and complex industry and management issues has been extremely helpful and I will miss our bi-weekly get togethers. Joe, wherever you land next in your career (and please if it’s at a non-AANA company, take along a membership application form!) I wish you health and happiness!
