John Dawson joins Initiative after short stint with sister agency Ensemble

Former Mindshare strategist John Dawson has joined IPG Mediabrands’ Initative as communications design director following a short stint with fellow Mediabrands agency Ensemble.

Dawson has a board director at UnLtd. since November 2015

Dawson has been a board director at UnLtd. since November 2015

Dawson was the strategy and communications director for Ensemble since August 2016 and prior to that was at Mindshare for three years, most recently working as a strategist in Mindshare’s specialist team Co-Creation.

He started his career as a marketing assistant to Group M’s Greg Graham.

Previously with Ensemble in Sydney as the strategy and communications director, Dawson won the Cannes Young Lions Award in 2014.

Dawson has also won the NGEN Award at the MFA Awards twice and two Media Federation Awards including the Grand Prix last year and won the Australian Cannes Young Lions competition in 2014.

In the new role at Initiative, Dawson will work with strategy and creative leads developing ideas that shape the experience people have with brands across owned, earned, shared and paid media.

The appointment follows Initiative’s new hire of Tristan Burrell as national chief strategy officer last month.

Formally with UM in Sydney as global head of strategy, Burrell also won the Cannes Young Lion in 2009.

Melissa Fein, Initiative CEO – who was appointed as the CEO in November– said: “The role we have for him is a runway to develop new levels of connectivity for people with brands and we are looking forward to his thinking and leadership for clients and our Sydney team.”
