John Stanley to host Nights across 2GB, 3AW and 4BC

Talk radio veteran John Stanley has returned to a permanent role as evening presenter across Macquarie Media’s 2GB in Sydney, 3AW in Melbourne and 4BC in Brisbane.

Stanley: Late night role

Stanley replaces Steve Price in the timeslot, who was last month given the lunchtime show on 2GB and 4BC.

Stanley’s show will air from 8pm until midnight in Sydney and Brisbane and from 8pm until 10pm in Melbourne.

The appointment comes a year after Stanley was dropped as the breakfast host of the company’s second string network Macquarie Sports Radio.

Prior to that Stanley had co-presented a breakfast show on sister station 2UE – which was rebadged to become the Sydney station for Macquarie Sports Radio – with Garry Linnell, for the previous five years.

During the most recent school holidays ratings break, Macquarie Media trialled Stanley in the late night role, giving him a marathon double shift of covering Ross Greenwood’s Money News show from 6pm until 8pm, before covering the Nights slot until midnight.

Before becoming a full time presenter, Stanley spent several years as a political correspondent as well as a stint as a programming executive at 2UE.

Stanley will be joined every night by Jane Marwick from 8pm to 9pm.

Based on the most recent set of ratings, Stanley will inherit strong audiences from Price. In Sydney, 2GB dominates the 7pm to midnight slot with an audience share of 14.3%. In Melbourne, 3AW is top for the slot with a share of 17.5%. However, in Brisbane, 4BC’s 8.5% share is sixth in the market.

Stanley said in a press release: “Night-time radio is a very important part of people’s lives, with foundations laid by the likes of my good friend, the late Stan Zemanek. There’s nothing more engaging than live talkback radio, and I can’t wait to talk to listeners right across the country every night.”

Macquarie CEO Adam Lang said: “I am delighted to be announcing John Stanley as our permanent host of Nights. Over more than 30 years, John has earned the trust and respect of the listening audience and has enormous credibility with clients. His affinity for his audience and his relentless capacity to work with advertisers made John the obvious choice to host the number one rating Nights program in Sydney and Melbourne.”
