Julia Gillard and John Howard team up for new Wallabies campaign
The Australian Rugby Union has launched a campaign for the Qantas Wallabies ahead of this year’s Rugby World Cup.
Featuring an all-star Australian cast including prime minister Julia Gillard, former prime minister John Howard, cricketer Shane Watson and Today Show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson – the ad urges Australians to get behind the team.
The agency behind the ad was Ogilvy & Mather Sydney and follows the Gods of Rugby TVC released in May.
The campaign also includes three thirty second executions.

Being a rugby tragic … only concern I have (TVC 1) is that they are only highlighing 3 x opposition teams). Needed to see more variety .. Italy / France / Pac Island teams … there is more out there than the All Blacks and Boks (and Ireland).

Why even bother – the Wallabies are gunna get rogered by the mighty ABs anyway…

Pretty much supports why Rugby is a marginal sport in this country and followed mainly by Young Liberals and people who shop at Gazman – John Howard, Ponytail Perry, Karl Stefanovic (only Kochy would’ve been better) etc.
Jesus, what a crew. Thank the lord the NRL will still be going for most of the RWC.

While I appreciate they had quite different goals, this is infinitely better than the botched Football World Cup video. Well done to all involved!

That is such a missed opportunity.
Why walk such a “well-trodden” path?
Some game shots mixed in with some Aussie personalities wearing yellow scarves…..

Superb soundtrack! I’m fired up. Well done

A nicely polished ad. But exactly what is it they want us to do? Buy tickets? Go to NZ for the RWC? Watch telly? Cheer when we see a Wallaby in the street? Buy a yellow scarf? Wear the yellow scarf rakishly?
I’m superstitious about these things; so Julia’s appearance after the promo tape for the Soccer World Cup bid schmozzle has me worried.
Obviously “Qantas Wallabies – One Nation” was not in the mix?
And what about the omissions? Won’t ex-Wallaby Mr Lisa Wilkinson be miffed?* Tony Abbott (who actually played Rugby)? Andrew Demetriou? David Gallop? Frank Lowy? Ok, scotch that last one? Was Alan Joyce there anywhere: or conflict of loyalties?
*Peter Fitzsimons, if you’re asking.

Ah ok! My bad. I had only seen the a version of the full length ad which had no game/ticketing info. But my rhetorical point remains.

The rip-off Inception soundtrack’s the highlight, oh and Gillard trying to look mean

Can’t help but get goose-bumps watching the full execution. Going to be a great year for Rugby and hopefully the Wallabies can rise to the challenge.
@Hammertime, it obviously features just 3 teams because the end frame is based on the domestic tests against New Zealand and South Africa.
GO THE WALLABIES!

Damn. There goes my plan to use the Inception music in my next ad.

I like this very much. Very inspirational.

I love it. Great job all involved. Whilst the celebs and sports stars deliver well – it’s seeing and hearing Peter Cosgrove come out of the dakness that does it for me.
Well done and Go The Wallabies!

This is piss poor. no idea, just used some stock footage. not creative at all. like a promo from channel 10 for a game.

Major missed opportunity. Preaching to the converted. It should have highlighted the truly international aspect of Rugby considering the game is 60 times larger than league on a global basis… and had more of an appeal to the leagies. Like highlighting how much more unpredictable and spectacular professional rugby can be compared with the girly scrums, predictable five tackles-kick and the stop-start nature of league. Maybe there are more spots to come?

This is truly disappointing. I was really excited for the coming of the RWC. I am now sadly less so. Where are the men we are to support? Let us see who will be fighting for our country. Introduce the newbies who will be trembling with anticipation as they walk out on the field. Let us know that they need our support. That they are fighting for us. That they are defending our reputation as a great sporting nation. Let us feel what they are feeling. Bring us in on what it is to be a Wallaby. What it is like to be confronted by an almighty Haka.
Make us feel Rugby.
Don’t simply introduce celebrities who may or may not know Rugby, and suggest we follow them like sheep.
