Junkee Media offloads LGBTI community hub SameSame to Evo Media for undisclosed sum

Same Same LogoJunkee Media has sold its LGBTI community hub SameSame.com.au to gay and lesbian publisher Evo Media for an undisclosed amount, Mumbrella can reveal.

Tim Duggan, Junkee Media co-founder, told Mumbrella the sale was a result of the process of bringing all the company’s titles onto the Junkee master domain following the companies rebrand from the Sound Alliance to Junkee Media in July.

“Junkee Media has been through a rapid phase of growth recently and we are in the process of bringing all of our titles onto the Junkee master domain,” he said.

“As part of this review we decided that Same Same didn’t strictly fit into our future strategic vision, and we genuinely thought that it would be able to grow to the next level under a dedicated and leading GLBT publisher like Evo Media.”

Duggan declined to comment on how much the publication was sold for.

Evo Media, the publisher of gay and lesbian print publications, including SX (Sydney), Melbourne Community Voice, Queensland Pride and Blaze (Adelaide), will look after all direct advertising sales for SameSame while Junke Media will continue to represent the site to media agency clients.

Evo Media’s Mark Anthony said in a statement: “With its passionate network of community members, SameSame broadens our reach across print and online, and expands the scope of our digital news offering, GayNewsNetwork.com.au. We are completely committed to furthering SameSame’s amazing work.”

The sale sees SameSame’s full-time editor Matt Akersten, who has been with the publication since 2010, move across to Evo Media, with no staff being let go as a result of the sale.

“SameSame.com.au is incredibly important to the many thousands of people who visit us daily from across Australia,” said Akersten. “We are privileged to have such a vibrant and engaged community, and our move to Evo Media will ensure we provide the best news and features about the issues close to our hearts. We have some amazing things to share in the coming months.”

In July the Sound Alliance repositioned and rebranded as Junkie Media and the publishing company also taking its media agency sales back in-house.

Junkee Media’s titles include Junkee, inthemix, FasterLouder and Qantas-backed travel title AWOL, created in partnership with Qantas. It is set to launch a new, as yet un-named site that will cover topics around finance, jobs, money, career, health and wellbeing. Duggan said the sale of SameSame was “not related at all to the new title we are currently working on”.
