Junkee founding and managing editor Steph Harmon is departing the online publication after nearly three years to join The Guardian as culture editor, with former Hoopla editor Lucy Clark also set to join the publication as senior editor.

Clark was the editor of The Hoopla from September 2012 to January this year, while Harmon had edited Junkee since February 2013.

Prior to Junkee Harmon worked as the editor of The Brag for just over three years and has also worked as a writer for The Vine and Time Out Melbourne and was an online content producer for ABC’s RN Breakfast from May 2009 to February 2010.

Tim Duggan, Junkee Media publisher, said: “Steph has been a great founding editor of Junkee over the past 3 years, and it’s been a fantastic period of growth for both Steph and Junkee. We wish her all the best with her new role and at the same time we are excited for a new Editor to take the reins and take Junkee to the next level.

“Whilst we have not appointed a replacement yet, conversations are happening and we are accepting applications and we will make an announcement in due course.”

Junkee Media is advertising for Harmon’s replacement who, according to the job ad, “will drive the attitude, tone and authority that’s integral to making Junkee unique in the youth space, and will oversee a team of editorial staff and contributors to ensure Junkee adds to the conversation, not just the noise”.

The publishing company, which rebranded from Sound Alliance to Junkee Media in July, is also set to launch a lifestyle entrepreneur finance site which will be framed around “how to adult better”. The company was searching for an editor to drive the new site back in August.

The Guardian Australia editor Emily Wilson said: “We’re so pleased Steph Harmon is joining us at Guardian Australia. She’s a very clever editor, as well as being super-digital, and she’s going to be a great addition to our team.”

Clark joins The Guardian on November 30 while Harmon beings with the company on January 4.
