JWT Melbourne announces redundancies

One of WPP’s legacy creative agencies, J Walter Thompson, has made a series of redundancies.

JWT confirmed the staff losses in a statement to Mumbrella putting the redundancies down to “client needs”.

JWT has made six people redundant

“J Walter Thompson Melbourne can confirm that a small number of staff have left the agency following a review of client demand against its resources. Client needs of the agency have evolved and while in response, we’ve made several new hires across CRM/CX, Social, Design and Retail, we regretfully also had to make some roles redundant,” a spokesperson said.

“Fortunately, being a member of the WPP AUNZ group, we’re able to explore opportunities for these individuals with our partner companies and we are hoping a number of those staff involved will be offered roles within the coming weeks.

“We always endeavour to avoid making redundancies, but as with any agency, there are times when for the health of the business, it’s regretfully something we have to do. This decision is not taken lightly and out of respect for those involved we have no further comment to make.”

Mumbrella understands the redundancies were made late last week and included around six staff members across account services, creative and production teams.

The job losses come after a series of change for the agency with Kieran Antill departing as its executive director last month.

In April, JWT Melbourne lost the creative account for RACV after it decided not to be involved in the pitch process, while one month prior it also parted ways with long-standing client Vegemite.

Meanwhile, last month WPP’s GTB also lost the global creative account for Ford as the company moved its account to BBDO.
